The activist and scholar bell hooks observed that the homeplace was a site of revolution. Whether you are a mother, or someone who works with mothers, you know that the act of mothering - all the emotional labor, bedtime stories, care and love, feeding, comforting, and encouraging - is an incredibly profound and meaningful experience.
But mothers are tired. Mothers are frustrated. Mothers are overwhelmed. The pandemic forced mothers everywhere to wake up to a painful truth…this world is not set up to support us. And until we understand how the institution of motherhood is socially constructed to exploit women and reinforce social inequality and injustice, we will continue to devalue mothers and hold them back from fully realizing their power and place in the world.
In this lively, interactive, 90 minute workshop, we will learn how to:
✨ Confidently name the personal stories and cultural systems that shape modern motherhood…and develop strategies for changing the stories that no longer serve us
✨ Recognize how the act of mothering is a path to self-actualization and empowerment…a practice that not only nourishes the mother, but elevates the entire family
✨ Understand the difference between dominator and partnership family models…and how to move from one to the other
✨ Begin to create a unique “Revolutionary Mothering Manifesto” that reflects personal values and serves as a commitment to a lifelong practice of actively forging the world that we want our children to inherit.
If you are a mother, or someone who works with mothers, it is critical to understand the unseen and insidious factors beyond our control that are affecting our everyday lives. This is a daunting task, as we grapple with issues of gender, race, class, disability, hierarchy, privilege, and more. This workshop takes decades of academic research and social activist initiatives and distills it into key areas where we can affect real change. Join this intimate cohort and let’s dive in!
